Relief Work - Delhi Unit
As soon as the lockdown was announced on the 25th of March 2020, there were news reports flowing in of lack of access to food and sanitation equipment in various bastis in Delhi. As an immediate measure lawyers and activists from SLIC collected various sums of money to buy dry ration and sanitation equipment for marginalised persons. Furthermore as the lockdown was exteded there were crowdfunding projects that were started for people to donate money in order to distribute to persons living bastis, boot polish workers, migrant workers, transgender persons among a range of other persons who are marginalised.
Socio-Legal Information Centre partnered with a number of organisations like Working People's Charter and Meer Foundation who went out to identify people who needed resources and provided them with the required amount of dry ration and santiation equipment such as masks and sanitizers. Since people working in the informal sector were unable to access petty employment, there was no way they could earn money either, they were left in abject poverty and pathetic conditions completely unable to sustain themselves.
The ration shops by the Delhi Government weren't located near the bastis and if people made any attempts to walk till the ration shops, they were beaten up by the police. Members from Socio-Legal Information Centre and Working People's Charter distributed both dry ration therefore increasing access to food and also distributed cooked food in places where they had no place to cook food.
